Here’s Dweezil Zappa during a tour stop in Phoenix in February 2009, waxing eloquent on the sonic virtues of a seldom-seen Fender fossil called the Duo-Sonic. Zappa has always been partial to the instrument, which is a short-scale student guitar model that carbon dates to late in the Eisenhower administration and which he calls “one of the unsung heroes in the Fender lineup.” Good luck finding an original one, by the way.
However, in total Jurassic Park-style, Squier resurrected the Duo-Sonic in 2008 as part of its popular Classic Vibe series—dubbed this time around as the Classic Vibe Duo-Sonic™ ’50s—and as you’ll see in the footage here, Zappa has plenty of good things to say about that, too.
Zappa is well known, of course, as a talented guitarist and composer who has played with a variety of artists and who has released several sonically adventurous solo albums. More recently, his exceptionally talented “Zappa Plays Zappa” tour has traveled the world, wowing audiences and critics alike by bringing the music and legacy of Frank Zappa to a new generation of listeners.
